Dear colleagues, friends and supporters,As Lord Mayor and Chair of the We Love MCR Charity I wanted to write to you
all personally as this year my aim is ensure the Charity has a big presence
in Albert Square during Manchester Day, Sunday 22 June.Manchester Day is a hugely popular annual event which draws thousands on to
the streets of the city centre to celebrate not only everything that is
great about Manchester but most of all its fantastic community spirit.
Every year thousands of people from communities right across the city turn
out to bring the city alive and create a parade full of colour, fun,
diversity and vibrance. My plan this year is for the Charity to have large and visual presence in
Albert Square during Manchester Day. This will provide a great opportunity
to not only raise the charity’s profile, interact with our communities but
also help raise important funds to help us continue to support community
projects like yours which I know are important to Manchester People. So this year I am asking all our supporters, groups, projects and
communities we have supported over the past few years to consider helping
out and get involved as a volunteer during the day. If this is something
you, your colleagues, members of your project or community would like to
support me with then please email welovemcrcharity@manchester.gov.uk
stating your full name, age, daytime tel number and name of organisation /
group / project etc. Further details will be circulated once we receive your expression of
interest. (**Please note there is a minimum age restriction volunteers) Please feel free to circulate this to your contacts.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance and lets make
this years’ Manchester Day the best ever…

The Lord Mayor of Manchester
Councillor Naeem ul Hassan

Talk English
Please forward on to anyone you think may be interested in this opportunity
Volunteer as a Talk English Friend to help people learn English and get more involved in their communities
Talk English is a new project which aims to help people with little or no English learn English and get more involved in the wider community.
We’re looking for enthusiastic, committed volunteers who want to make a real difference to people’s lives and provide one-to-one support to people with little or no English to help them improve their English skills, access services and get more involved in their community.
As a Talk English Friend, you will be matched with people with little or no English who you will meet with regularly to practise English.  You will arrange to meet your Friend at a convenient time and place each week.  Together you will agree on things to do, like going to a library or leisure centre, going for a walk or visiting a museum or gallery.  There will also be Talk English Activities taking place in different locations across the city where you and your friend can meet with others on the Talk English project.
To prepare you for your role, you will receive information and free training about being a Talk English Friend.  You will also be able to access our Talk English Activities and website and be part of a network of Talk English Friends.
To be a Talk English Friend you will need to be able to demonstrate good skills in spoken and written English at Level 1 and good computer skills at Entry 3.  You will also need at least an hour every week to meet up with your Talk English Friends.

The first training course is due to take place over 2 days on Friday 28 March and Friday 4 April, 9:30am – 3pm at Longsight Library and Learning Centre, 519 Stockport Road, M12 4NE.  If you can’t make the first training course, plaese still apply as there will be more courses starting at regular intervals throughout the year.

So what’s Talk English all about?Funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG), the Talk English project aims to improve the language skills of people with little or no English in Blackburn with Darwen, Bradford, Burnley, Hyndburn, Kirklees, Manchester, Oldham, Pendle and Rochdale.Through the Talk English project we are:

  1. Offering Talk English Courses in community settings to help people improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English.  These courses are taught by volunteer ESOL teachers who are trained and supported through the project.
  2. Recruiting, training and supporting volunteer Talk English Friends who will offer 1:1 support to people with low levels of English in order to help them improve their language skills, access services and get more involved in their community.
  3. Working with local businesses and public services to increase ESOL awareness in staff and train them to be ‘sympathetic listeners’, enabling more people with low levels of English to Talk English Here and access services.
  4. Working with local services and community organisations, Talk English Activities will take place to provide further opportunities for people to practise their English.
  5. Developing a Talk English Website to provide general information about all aspects of the project and provide training and learning resources for Talk English volunteers and learners.

What’s in it for me?
This is a great opportunity for you to gain experience and develop new skills while making a difference to peoples’ lives.  You’ll get to meet people from all over the world, learn about other cultures and be part of a really exciting project!

So how do I get involved?
If you’re interested in finding out more, complete the online application form and tell us a bit about yourself, including why you want to be a volunteer Talk English Friend.  The first course starts on Friday 28 March 2014.
